About Us

Who are Friends of Portland Park?
The Friends of Portland Park (or 'fopp' for short) are a small team of local volunteers who act independently with a remit to promote, enhance and protect Portland Park and it's rich biodiversity, history and unique geology, working alongside Ashfield District Council and other regional and national organisations.

Set up in 1992, the Friends have been involved in numerous projects within the park, including the provision of free events for the public. Projects have included the renovation of Victoria Ponds in 2001 and more recently extensive path improvements for disabled and other visitors.

The Friends are the eyes and ears of the park and regularly feedback information to Ashfield District Council and liaise with them to bring improvements and information for the public that use this valuable resource.

The Friends meet on an informal basis and anyone is welcome and encouraged to have their say. These meetings usually take place in the Duke of Wellington pub on Church Street, Kirkby-in-Ashfield. Please feel free to attend and if you want to be more involved that's even better - as it is voluntary there is no commitment but everyone's hard work is appreciated.

So on behalf of 'fopp' let me please extend a warm welcome to all. Please take time to enjoy our website. We aim to update the site regularly with new information as our long term plan is to have a detailed online Portland Park information resource available to all.
